Clarcut vs Cursorful: which one should you choose?

Updated

In short

Cursorful is first a free extension for Chrome, Edge and Brave that records your browser tab and adds automatic zooms, rendered locally with no watermark, but only for non-commercial use and without mic or webcam. Cursorful Pro ($79 one-time at the time of writing) adds a Mac and Windows desktop app, commercial use, mic, webcam and 4K. Clarcut is a native app that records your whole screen from the free version on, with webcam, mic, zooms and smooth cursor, and Clarcut Pro is a one-time $44. To quickly film a web app for free, Cursorful is very handy; for videos with your voice and face, Clarcut does more without paying.

An extension versus a native app

Cursorful was born in the browser: the extension records the tab, detects your clicks and zooms in automatically, then renders the video locally, inside the browser. It's lightweight, there's nothing to install beyond the extension, and it's perfect for showing a web app. If you Alt-Tab to another window, the extension keeps recording the browser.

To record the full screen, you need Cursorful Pro and its desktop app, which auto-crops to the active window and adds cursor effects (smoothing, size, motion blur). Clarcut is a native app (Windows and Apple silicon Mac) that records the full screen, a window or an area from the free version on.

The differences that matter

  • Voice and face: Cursorful's free version records neither mic nor webcam. Clarcut's free version records webcam, mic and system audio.
  • Commercial use: Cursorful's free version is non-commercial only. Clarcut's free version has no such restriction, just a small watermark.
  • Watermark: on the flip side, Cursorful's free version has none, while Clarcut's free version does.
  • How zooms trigger: Cursorful zooms when you click twice within three seconds and stays zoomed while you keep clicking. Clarcut places a zoom on your clicks, and you can adjust it, make it follow the cursor, or add one with the Z key.
  • Audio and webcam: Clarcut removes background noise, cuts silences and moves the webcam bubble out of the cursor's way. Cursorful doesn't advertise these.
  • Sharing: Cursorful Pro includes 15 GB of shared cloud storage. With Clarcut, links are optional with Clarcut Plus (100 GB, videos up to 2 hours).

Two one-time purchases: the math

Both are pay-once. Cursorful Pro costs $79 (listed price as of November 2026, marked down from $119), with lifetime access to current and future offline features. Clarcut Pro costs $44, with one year of updates, then optional updates at $21/year; Pro keeps working without them. Over 3 years, Clarcut comes to $44 without updates, or $86 if you renew each year.

Privacy

Here the two are alike: Cursorful renders the video locally and only uploads it if you use its cloud features; Clarcut edits and transcribes on your computer and uploads nothing without a share link. Note that Cursorful's captions are generated in the browser.

When to pick Cursorful instead of Clarcut

  • You mostly film a web app, with no voice or webcam, for a personal or educational project: the free version is enough and has no watermark.
  • You're on Linux or an Intel Mac: the extension runs wherever Chrome, Edge or Brave do.
  • You can't install software on your work computer, but you can add an extension.

Recording a 2-minute web app demo in each, step by step

  1. 1

    Cursorful (free extension): record

Open the tab with your web app and start recording from the extension. Remember the free version records no mic or webcam, so this works for silent demos, or you'll add a voiceover elsewhere.

  2. 2

    Cursorful: edit

Zooms appear where you clicked twice within three seconds. Add, remove or adjust zooms, pick a preset or custom background, and hide the browser's tabs and bookmarks bar for a cleaner frame.

  3. 3

    Cursorful: export

The video renders locally in your browser. Export to MP4 or GIF in one of the available aspect ratios (4K needs Pro).

  4. 4

    Clarcut: record

Pick the browser window, or an area around your app, turn on the mic and webcam if you want to narrate, and start (Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows).

  5. 5

    Clarcut: edit

Zooms are placed on your clicks and the cursor is smoothed. Hide the real window's title bar and use a fake browser frame instead, cut silences in one click, and speed up typing sections automatically.

  6. 6

    Clarcut: export

Export to MP4 or GIF, in 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5. On the free version it's 1080p at 30 fps with a small watermark; Pro unlocks 4K, 60 fps and captions.

For a silent clip of a web app, Cursorful's free extension is quicker to set up and leaves no watermark. As soon as you want to talk over the demo, show your face, or step outside the browser, Clarcut covers it without paying.
